Program Overview
Train as a Community Health Assistant (CHA) to support the delivery of Kenya’s Community Health Strategy at the grassroots level. This KNEC-examined certificate builds practical skills in household registration, health education, data collection & reporting, community outreach, referrals, and linkage to primary health facilities under the supervision of Community Health Officers.
Duration & Study Pattern
- Duration: 2 academic years (6 terms)
- Term format: ~12 teaching weeks + 2 assessment weeks
- Weekly rhythm: Mon–Thu theory/practical • Fri fieldwork/community projects
Teaching & Learning

- Monitoring & Evaluation Basics; Data Quality & Use
- Community Practicum & Project (needs assessment → intervention → report)
Field Placements
- Community Health Units (CHU): household registration, CHV meetings, outreaches
- Public/faith-based facilities for linkage (MCH, CCC, OPD health talks)
- County/Sub-county health offices (programs & surveillance)
Logbook: competencies signed by supervisors (education sessions, referrals, data tools, reports).
Assessment (KNEC)
- Coursework (40%) — CATs, presentations, field logs, mini-projects
- Finals (60%) — KNEC written exams + practical/portfolio defense
- Project/Practicum: community-based capstone with report & presentation
Entry Requirements
- KCSE Mean Grade D+ (Plus) or higher
- D+ in English/Kiswahili and Biology
- D in one of: Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Geography, Agriculture, Business
Applicants with relevant experience or short courses may be considered individually per policy.
